Hello, I am Álgen Weiss, or if you wish to call me Arctic I do not mind but I will call you by your real name, it is a habit, you could say, that I have developed over time. Perhaps we could be on good terms but that is entirely up to you, just do not expect me to help with any snow trouble you may have in the future if you choose to go against me.

Basic information

Human Name: Álgen Weiss
Continent Name: The Arctic (North Pole)
Gender: Female
Physical Age: 30 Years
Birthday: 27th February

Appearance

Height: 5'9"
Body Type: Athletic, slim, sturdy, felxible, quite strong
Skin Tone: Pale
Hair Colour: White
Eye Colour: Ice Blue

Background

When the continent was young in its icy state Álgen had a very solitary life as there weren't many people around to talk to, but slowly and surely, nations started to crop up. She got to know many of the ancient nations and became less anti-social. However after the second ice age and the ice of the Arctic began to melt again Álgen was walking over it and it gave way under her. She was then frozen for almost half a million years in the icy sea that was still freezing over and thawing every year. When she thawed out she found the world had changed dramatically and there were new nations which replaced the old ones she knew. Arctic talked to many of the nations, asking what was new and who the new nations were.
The Arctic used to have small tribes that remained after the second Ice Age, these people were known as the Saami. They had always thought they were the only humans in the world until a party of people from England and America went on an expedition to the Artctic. When they found a Saami tribe they diecided to take two of the children to England in order to educate them in the modern world. However they died on the way due to disease, some of the Saami tribe also died due to the diseases that would have lingered on the expedition party. After finding out they were no longer the only humans, the Saami moved from the Arctic into the neighbouring Nordic areas.

Arctic and Norway

After her people, the Saami, went to different lands when they found out they weren't the only people in the world, the first place they settled was in Norway. Álgen had been a bit intimidated by all of the change of the world that she had seen so far, it all seemed a bit much for her to take in and it didn't help when her people left causing her to feel a bit alone. However, she still watched the Saami to make sure they were doing ok, at least she knew about other people being around while they were on a learning curve and wanting to travel themselves. One day Arctic was sitting on a hill watching one of her tribes as they got one witht heir lives when she felt a tug on her coat. She turned her head to see a child, waist deep in snow, looking up at her with dull blue eyes. Álgen was confused by this boy, she didn't even know why he was up here by himself, surely his parents should be with him. He walked to a spot next to her and looked down at the tribe too with a blank expression. Arctic wondered if he was cold, children didn't last long without support and protection and he didn't seem to have any. It actually took her a couple of days to think through what to do but in the end decided to take him in herself if he was still alone. She found him in the same place as where she first saw him and she said she would look after him. Álgen soon found his name was Lukas Bondvik, the personification of Norway. Although he didn't speak much or show much emotion he became interested in Artic's magic and wanted to know how she performed her tricks so she agreed to show him a few things.

Arctic and Sweden

Álgen followed her people as they moved around, taking Lukas with her so he wasn't laft behind, keeping her word to look after him. Soon they went over the border into Sweden, the land didn't look too different and food wasn't as different either so they stayed for a while. In that time Norway had become a bit older and understood things more, he was a quick learner, it may of helped that he focused and didn't say much so he could concentrate. After a heavy snowfall Norway had gone to look around after informing Arctic, she understood people needed their space and agreed as long as he didn't go too far. AFter a while he came back but with a blond boy with brghter blue eyes. He had a straight face and a sharp stare and was taller than Norway. Álgen asked Lukas who this other boy was and he replied with the name Berwald Oxenstierna and said he was alone in the deep snow. Another child alone in another counrty, she had figured why that might be, it seemed the paernts of those who were personifications left them, Arctic didn't know why it just seemed to be that way. She crouched down and looked at Berwald, she seemed to be doing a good job with Lukas so far and he would be getting a bit lonely without someone around his age around so allowed the new boy come with them. She found Berwald was also very quiet, if even more quiet than Lukas but he did seem to try and interact with Norway and he did what he was told without question. So now the personification of Norway were in her protection and now so was Sweden.

Arctic and Finland

The thrid of the counrties the Saami entered was Finland. Álgen was walking with the two kids, they were just scouting around the area when they heard giggling. Arctic then noticed a small blond haired boy in the distance, not knowing if he was from her people or some other occupants that were already living in the land. After a while it turned out he had come from a Saami tribe but didn't seem to have anyone to look after him once again and the other two seemed to take an interest in this younger boy. The constant silence of the Lukas and Berwald was actually wearing a bit Álgen and she saw how happy this little one seemed so like the other two she look im in. However, Finland seemed more of a son to her since he had come directly from the Saami, unlike the other two which weren't completely Saami, Sweden actually had Viking in him. The boy was really quite joyful and always had a smile on his face which made Artic feel happy too, he was shorter than Berwald and around the same height as Norway. She'd found he was called Tino and he was the personification of Finland. Berwald seemed to take a strong interest in Tino and the younger boy would smile at him and play around.

Arctic and Russia

As Álgen travelled to see a little bit more of the world then go back to the Nordics she was looking after, she had also found an arctic fox cub which Tino had found and brought back, begging for it to come with them. With a chuckled Artic agreed, and the cub had followed her all over the place. After a while Arctic came across a small boy who was wearing a long coat and scarf which was ripped. He was lying in the snow after a strong snowstorm, she picked him up and wrapped him up in her coat. Since she was the coldest continent her body temperature was always high so she could keep warm. The small boy snuggled into her and looked up, opening his eyes to reveal two bright violet eyes, he smiled at her and she looked at him in awe. She was thinking who would leave such a small boy out in a storm as bad as that and how cold he was, surely parents wouldn't be this cold-hearted. Álgen took him with her and out he was another one of the new nations although it was small, his name was Ivan Braginski, or Russia as we know him now. He Seemed childish with his round face and smile and lively, he was also around the same height as Sweden. He and Finland played together the most as Lukas just sat minding his own business reading his book or working on his magic while Berwald just watched them. Arctic had her hands full with the four nations and enjoyed being around them with their different personalities, they all seemed to even each other out.

Area

At the top of the world (XD) Just above the Nordics, Russia, Canada and Greenland, in the Northern Hemisphere

Personality

Can be outgoing, acts a bit cold towards everyone until she gets to know them, she is one of the oldest of the countries/continents, loves winter sports, not very sociable, short tempered, doesn't get creeped out or scared easily, can be protective and motherly after looking after Russia, Finland, Norway and Sweden

Who owns the Arctic?

In August 2007 Russian scientists sent a submarine to the Arctic Ocean seabed at 90° North to gather data in support of Russia's claim that the North Pole is part of the Russian continental shelf. The expedition provoked a hostile reaction from other Arctic littoral states and prompted media speculation that Russia's action might trigger a "new Cold War" over the resources of the Arctic.
Luckily things are at least a little more in control now though. Well, sort of. Canada, Denmark and the US still need to define their continental shelf limits. Keep in mind that the shelf can be more than 200 nautical miles from these countries' coastal baselines.

Arctic exploration

Between the 16th and early 20th centuries the quest to learn more about the vast unknown lands lying above the 50th parallel of latitude in North America, and above the 70th parallel in Eurasia, led to numerous arctic expeditions with a geographical objective. Perhaps the most famous quest of all was that for the Northwest Passage- the fabled link between the Atlantic and Pacific around North America, that would supposedly shorten the trade route to the Orient from Europe. At the same time that a Northwest Passage around North America was being sought, a Northeast Passage around Eurasia was also being attempted. The numerous expeditions that were undertaken over the course of several centuries continuously added to the knowledge of the arctic, including the discovery of new islands.
The initial driving force for finding an alternate trade route to the orient was the capture of Constantinople (Istanbul today) by the Turks in 1453. This allowed them to control the Straits of Bosporus and interrupt trade between Europe and the Orient. Later on- much later- the driving force for polar geographical exploration would be the search for scientific knowledge about this vast and poorly known area, and nationalistic pride derived from setting records for achieving “furthest north” and attempts on the pole.
The first recorded explorations for a westerly passage to the Orient from Europe began with Columbus in 1492, followed shortly by John Cabot who, in 1497, made a landfall much farther north than Columbus, probably in Newfoundland. Giovanni da Verrazzano, sailing under the French flag in 1524, tried to find a northwest passage around the recently “discovered” land and sailed as far north as Maine or Nova Scotia. Jacques Cartier was trying to find a route to China in 1535 when he discovered the St. Lawrence River, and contacted Iroquoian-speaking peoples living along it. Although his objective was geographical the ultimate outcome of his discovery was the settlement of New France. By 1610 Hudson Bay is known to exist, but most of the western coastline would not be explored until the mid 1700s.
What proved to be the toughest nut to crack was the passage through the Arctic Islands of Canada. It was eventually established that it was not possible for vessels to use Hudson Strait to effect a northwest passage, and so a passage further north, through Lancaster Sound, became the only way for ships of that era to attempt the passage. But the ice pack was not kind to these early explorers. Lancaster Sound and most of the other channels through these islands were frequently blocked by ice for the entire year. Sometimes vessels were beset in the pack ice for one or more years, drifting wherever the pack went. Sometimes the vessels were released and sometimes they were crushed to splinters. The early explorers had to contend with ice, Arctic weather, scurvy, and numerous other obstacles to gain the geographical information that the Arctic grudgingly gave up.
One of the most famous expeditions ever to attempt the Northwest Passage was that of Sir John Franklin. He departed England in 1845 with two Royal Navy vessels and never returned. Over 40 search expeditions scoured the Arctic Islands for several decades vainly searching for Franklin and his crew. It wasn’t until 1857 that some evidence was found that documented that the vessels had been beset in ice near King William Island (approximately 70° N latitude) for two years and been abandoned. None of the crew survived the rigors of the Arctic long enough to be rescued. Search efforts continue to this day to piece together what happened to Franklin and his crew.
Eventually the Northwest Passage would be conquered, but Franklin’s loss cooled Great Britain’s ambition to be the first nation to do so. Instead, British (and other) explorers turned their attentions to the North Pole. The last decades of the nineteenth century saw a succession of expeditions that achieved records of “furthest north”. During these Greenland was explored and mapped along it northwest coastline, as were some of the more northerly islands of Arctic Canada.
The region north of Europe and Siberia also saw its share of polar exploration. Spitsbergen Island, at 80 degrees North latitude, was a convenient jumping-off place for sledging trips north over the Arctic ice pack or east to the vast region lying to the north of Siberia. In 1893 Fridtjof Nansen sailed in the Fram to determine whether there existed a westerly circumpolar current in the Arctic Ocean. The Fram was beset in ice near the New Siberian Islands (80° N, 140° E). It drifted erratically westward over the next three years, to be finally released from the ice near Spitsbergen in 1896. This, along with other evidence, demonstrated that a westerly set to the current does in fact exist.
In what would prove a dramatic climax to a long career in the Arctic, Robert Peary, along with Matthew Henson and Inuit explorers Oatah, Egingwah, Seegloo, and Ookeah made the North Pole by dog sledge from Cape Columbia on Ellesmere Island, on April 6, 1909. This achievement would not dampen man’s enthusiasm for exploring the secrets of the Arctic. Today we have ice-breaker ships making way through the ice, scientific stations floating on the pack ice for years at a time, ecotourism trips to Greenland and elsewhere, and repeated efforts to get to the North Pole by ski, dog sledge, snowmobile, and aircraft.

I swear down, I haven't been on this account in months and months and I come back to see a comments saying my Arctic here is a Mary-Sue. HELLO! SHE IS NOT! Algen is FAR from perfect, being a continent of ice makes her MORE at risk from things like global warming and she had been in both states of weakness and strong due to the climate around the North Pole, her magic strength also depends on her own strength, so she is actually pretty weak compared to modern nations. Oh and yeah leaving messages about cutting or cutting someone else. NO! What if I did cut? That can be VERY damaging to people who are sensitive to that topic. Sorry I came bac

OK so I've just finished watching Black Butler, the first series. my Ciel/Fem!America/Levi/Annie got me to watch it and such claiming that I would be Sabastian and she wanted me to be her butler. Just now I've done some looking into the accounts that are already there and what I've discovered is that most of the accounts there actually seem to be the same person, they must have been so bored, no wonder their accounts just died. So, me and ~UKArthurKirkland (https://www.deviantart.com/ukarthurkirkland) (who is Finnian) would like to ask anyone if you would like to join us in reviving this community. a wide variety of people would be preferable. If people would like to join us then pl

Ok....yeah....why do things kick off again when I say I'm coming back on to my accounts? Anyway, I think I'm back..... *waits for something to now kick off* I'll just be on less often than when I was completely active here. the reason, I've started college and I have to take things seriously now because I'm on an animal management course and I NEED distinctions to even be a vet nurse or get onto higher education....so yeah, study for me! Either way though I'm back. I won't be doing bios until the holidays, not this Halloween break coming up because going to the goth weekend, this year with the England of my group XD fitting how we're having a
